Local:
Derivatives of squaric acid have a resonance structure which presents an electrostatic mimic for the phosphate group. Squaric acid and its derivatives are used as a replacement for phosphate diester linkages in an oligodeoxynucleotide and phosphates in peptide-based ligands. Squaric acids are used to synthesize inhibitors of protein tyrosine phosphatases in medicinal chemistry. It is used in the synthesis of photosensitive squaraine dyes.
